Saying he is being torn apart ("lacerato") by the theatrical journals, that he has already paid more than 5,000 francs--will he have to return to Italy without giving an opera? ... disgraced?--, asking him to send some money for an old friend, saying that his poor wife is consumed with tears and that their life is filled with sadness, asking him to give Mercadante new life by assuring him that Romani has not abandoned him, etc.
